Topaz Elements FAQs
Here are the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) and issues that our staff receives about the Topaz Elements system. Click on a question hyperlink to see the corresponding answer.
Access and Logging Into Topaz Elements
Topaz Elements can be accessed over the Internet at https://uconnprod.topazti.net/UCElements/
. Use your UConn Health domain account username and password to login. Note this may be different from what you had used previously to login to Topaz Enterprise or Granite. Citrix is no longer used so you may access Topaz Elements from wherever you have Internet access — at home, in the office, or while traveling.
Topaz Elements is secured with your UConn Health domain account username and password. All users must have a UConn Health domain account.
No, since Topaz Elements utilizes the UConn Health domain account username and password, the eRA Help Desk cannot assist you with password resets. You would need to use the UConn Health IT Self Service Password reset
, contact the UConn Health Help Desk at 860-679-4400 or HelpDesk@uchc.edu
regarding changing your UConn Health domain account password. Once your password is changed, you will be able to use it for Topaz Elements.
Double check your password. If it is correct, please contact the eRA Help Desk at email@example.com
or 860-486-7944 and provide the help desk staff with your UConn Health domain account username. DO NOT
send us your password, just your account username. If you were a Topaz Enterprise or Granite user previously, it is likely due to a mismatch with your former local login account on these older systems and an incorrect domain account username listed in Elements. Our help desk will need to correct the issue for your account before you will be able to login with your UConn Health credentials. We will also be able to advise you if you need to request Topaz Elements access if you are not found in our system.
System Requirements for Topaz Elements
You need a UConn Health domain account username and password that has application level access to Topaz Elements and an up-to-date, compatible web browser (IE 11, Firefox ESR, or Safari) with the MS Silverlight plugin.
No, Google Chrome (v45 or later) does not support Silverlight content which is required to use Topaz Elements. This issue occurs because new versions of Chrome block Netscape Plugin API (NPAPI) plugins from being displayed in the browser. Silverlight is an NPAPI plugin. Please choose an alternative browser such as Internet Explorer 11, Firefox or Safari to access Topaz Elements.
No, the Microsoft Edge browser does not support the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in so it cannot be used to access Topaz Elements. Please use an another browser such as Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) or IE 11 instead.
No, beginning in March 7, 2017 Mozilla Firefox released 52.0
. This version removed support for Netscape Plugin API (NPAPI) plugins other than Flash. Silverlight, Java, Acrobat and the like are no longer supported. So if you are trying to use this general release version, Silverlight will stop working in Firefox and you will continue to be prompted to install it. If you wish to continue to use Firefox to access Topaz Elements, you must download and install Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) beginning with version 52. Firefox ESR currently supports NPAPI plugins like Silverlight. Download Firefox ESR at https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/
. Note, only Firefox ESR for Windows or Mac OS will work with Topaz since Topaz Elements does not support Linux. You must also have administrative rights to install the software. If you do not, contact your department IT person and/or the UConn Health help desk and ask them to install Firefox ESR on your machine.
After installing, confirm that your have Firefox ESR (go to Help > About Firefox; It should read Firefox ESR 52.0 or higher) as shown in the image below.

There are a few possible reasons for this message. Try these potential solutions. First, make sure you have access to Topaz Elements. Access to the application must be specifically requested through the UConn Health User Access Request (UAR) system at http://uar.uchc.edu
. If you are unsure, contact the eRA Help Desk at 860-486-7944 to see if you already have access and confirm there are no other issues with your account. Secondly, make sure you are correctly logging into Topaz Elements at this URL: https://uconnprod.topazti.net/UCElements/
. On the UConn Health login screen, it should say “Log in to UConnProd.topazti.net” above the username entry field. If it says, “Log in to Unspecified Service Provider,” you are actually not logging into a Shibboleth enabled website and will likely receive this error if you enter correct UConn Health credentials. To fix, use the URL above. Also, do not bookmark the UConn Health Shibboleth login page, but instead bookmark a page inside of Topaz after successful login.
This is typically due to the user bookmarking the UConn Health Shibboleth login page, rather than a Topaz Elements page. When you enter your UConn Health login onto a page that says “Unspecified Service Provider”, Shibboleth doesn’t know where to redirect you so it presents a nebulous error about contacting the UConn Health help desk, cookies being enabled, etc. To correct this error, go to Topaz Elements at https://uconnprod.topazti.net/UCElements/ instead and confirm the screen says UConnProd.topazti.net above the username. Then, enter your UConn Health login credentials. If successful, you will be redirected to Topaz Elements automatically. Click the login button on the Topaz Elements screen. Now you are inside the application, so if desired, bookmark a page for easy reference at a later time. Also, delete your old bookmark.
Typically, this is due to your session ending and attempting to load a file from your cache. Try to reload the web page(s) and bypass the cache to clear possibly outdated files stored locally on your computer by following one of these steps depending on your computer operating system and browser.
- Press “Ctrl + F5” or press “Ctrl + Shift + R” on your keyboard
- Hold down the Shift key on your key board and left-click the Reload button
- Go to Safari > Empty Cache (Older versions), Newer Versions see these instructions
- Press “Opt + Cmd + E” keys on the keyboard, all at once.
- Press “Cmd + Shift + R” keys on the keyboard, all at once.
- Press “Command + Shift + R” keys on the keyboard, all at once.
After using one of these keyboard shortcuts, or clearing your cache, the UConn Health Shibboleth login page should appear. Enter your UConn Health username and password to login to Topaz Elements.
Firefox handles plug-ins via the Add-on Manager. To access it, press Ctrl + Shift + A on your keyboard. The Add-on Manager appears in a new tab. Locate Silverlight in the listing. Choose Always Activate from the drop down to choose when Silverlight can run. If Ask to Activate is selected, you will need to activate Silverlight each time.
Also, make sure you are using Firefox ESR (go to Help > About Firefox; It should read Firefox ESR 52.0 or higher) as the regular release of Firefox v52+ no longer supports NPAPI plugins like Silverlight.
